Google’s Gmail is the most popular email service today. Despite of the security services that Gmail offers, hackers sometimes become successful in getting into your inbox. Here are some ways through which you can handle the security issues in your Gmail account and protect it from hackers.
Google has introduced an amazing security feature; two–step verification. This adds an extra security layer to your account where you are send a security code to your phone number every time you try to log in to your account. Thus, no one can breach your account security without having access to your phone.
To set up this feature, click on your user name’s initial icon on the top right corner. Click ‘My Account’ and select ‘Sign-in & Security’ option. Scroll down and find ‘2-step verification’ option on the right side page. Click on the ‘>’ icon in front of it and click ‘Get Started’ to start the process. Follow the on-screen instructions to enable 2-step verification.
Check ‘Grant access to your account’ section
Click on gear icon, select ‘Settings.’ Click ‘Accounts and Imports’ tab. Make sure ‘Mark conversation as read when opened by others’ option is checked.
This will allow you to check if someone has accessed your account without your permission and read your emails.
Check Filter, Forwarding and POP/IMAP
There are chances that hacker put filter in your account or change your forwarding and POP/IMAP settings to get hands on your personal information.
To check, go to Settings>Filters and check for unfamiliar filters.
Check the ‘Forwarding and POP/IMAP’ tab to see if there is any foreign or unknown forwarding address.
Track Last Account Activities
Scroll down to the end of your inbox.
Find ‘Last account activity: (number) minutes ago’. It is at the bottom-right corner written in small font. Click on ‘Details’ below it to see the access type, IP location and date/time. Make sure the ‘Alert preference’ is set to ‘Show an alert for unusual activity’. You will see this option on the details page.
Make strong security question’s answer
Hackers find it easy to hack your account through security question. Create a question smartly and provide a wrong answer. But, you should be able to remember it.
Go to gear icon>Settings>Accounts and Imports>Change password recovery options. Click ‘Edit’ on the security question option and change it.
Cross Check the Emails
If you receive an emergency email from your friends’ email id and you just wish to open it. Stop. First talk with your friend and ask him/her if he/she is actually in an emergency or have sent that email. If not, your friend’s account is hacked. Inform him the same and ask him to change his password immediately.
